State of the Personal Insurance Universe For 2012

Rosalyn Binday, Founder
Advocate Brokerage Corp.

You won’t like hearing this, but we believe 2012 is a prelude to insurance rate increases across the board. As climate change rears its ugly head, Mother Nature may even become surlier.

These natural catastrophes are causing insurers to rethink their pricing. Sooner or later, depending upon where you live, it may become more difficult to find affordable insurance coverage…especially if you own coastal or hurricane-prone property. This is one of the rare occasions that we hope to be wrong.

Why do we think this? Weather-wise, 2011 has certainly proven to be a memorable year for insurers. As of December 2011, there have been 98 providentially declared disasters affecting 45 states and territories. Here in the Northeast, large metropolitan areas have experienced damaging hail storms, crippling blizzards, and record heat waves.

Wind-related claims are also abundant during strong thunderstorms, as wind gusts can peel off shingles and make projectiles out of tiles and roofs can be ripped off and blown to the moon. There are earthquakes and floods…some covered by insurance and, some not. And let us not forget the trees with overhanging tree limbs that can come crashing down on houses, cars, etc…. and can also become projectiles. In fact, anything not tied down can become a projectile when strong winds blow.

Events that occur elsewhere in the country still effect us…like killer tornadoes and drought conditions in the West the cause severe wildfire activity. Clearly, if the cost of construction material escalates, it affects us all regardless of where we live. The gist of the matter is that the number of covered claims citing weather-related damages has skyrocketed. Settling a slip and fall on snow and ice, a hail claim, or a lightning strike that burns down the house is costly. Not that we are crying for the poor insurers, but it is interesting to note that even when there is no pay-out on a loss, there is a significant cost to investigate and determine whether a payout is due.

According to A.M. Best’s report, the industry’s investment performance was impacted by the low interest-rate environment, volatility in the equity markets and widening credit spreads. Personal, commercial and U.S. reinsurance lines reported significant underwriting losses. The industry as a whole, reported underwriting losses of $30 billion, compared to $2 billion from the same period in 2010.

STICK WITH US. If the going gets tough, one of the many good reasons for having an independent insurance agent is that we have knowledge about the pulse of the market and the available choices. Representing many, many carriers, each with different outlooks and appetites, we are in this together…and we are at your command!

4+ DAYS OF BLACK OUT!!!

Finally over!

Who said you cannot go back in life? In thus 4 days it’s exactly what I did. Just as I reach retirement age – I went back to my youth. Not by choice. Once again survive but with a little hindsight for the morrow. Make sure the gas tank in the car is filled, drive around collecting free wood pallets for the fireplace, clean and stack them properly; Once again brush my teeth, wash my face (with soap) using only one cup of warm water and two sheets of paper towel; Make a perfect toast on open fire for breakfast and delicious whole roasted corn for lunch.; keep the fire going as long as possible into the night despite the wet woods; appreciate and enjoy hot showers at friend’s house (c&c) who got power back way before me; Dry out my big towel by keeping it in my car (solar power); Judy E. the wonderful quilt you made for me, kept me warm at nights (of about 20 degrees) as an extra blanket; the new innovative flashlight let me read late into the nights without going blind; having no computer, fax and phone with only limited use of cell phone, liberated me to ‘enjoy’ washing dishes in cold water, cooking only at day time; chopping wood and collecting kindling. Thanks to Greg I got and learn the use of dry ice (thanks NYSEG) and kept the food from getting spoiled … and above all, keeping my cool and sense of humor. Till today Wednesday.

All of the sudden I needed my computer really bad, smoky house was good, maybe, for Smoky Bear, but I wanted to open doors and windows for the sunny day outside; be warm inside my home not out in the car, facing the sun (solar energy heat) while endlessly recharging my cell phone; wanted to sleep again without cover, wanted to not to be cold again in the long dark evening that sent me out to the movies (Footloose & Anonymous -both good) or to the lecture halls. Wanted to stay home, enjoy my evening tea while reading news from Israel. Yes, I can go back to my youth, camping out for days to end. But, do I want to? At least not in the winter.

And today, at temperature of 35 INSIDE the house, a bunch of good looking guys from Plattsburgh NY heard my cry and came to the rescue. I was sooooo happpy to see them. They were polite and cheerful. Promised to replace the pole we lost in no time so I can be warm again. I wanted to buy them Pizza, but someone else beat me to it. So left my house open, while I am gone, for them to use (bathroom and alike) they thanked be again and again.

Only when I was few miles away I remembered, there is no running water in the house today till evening….

I call it life.

Tomorrow – back to work. REAL LIFE. Best to all, Miriam

Spray Foam Insulation How to save money on heating bills this winter

Blue Bird Insulation
Started in 1999 by Hilmar Fenger, the Hilmar Development Group team is excited about influencing the growth of local communities through real estate development.

Fenger, a 12-year veteran of the residential building industry, and a licensed spray foam insulation contractor, is deeply rooted and invested in Putnam and Westchester County. With offices in Putnam and Croton-on-Hudson, New York, the company is invested in projects throughout Putnam, Dutchess and Westchester County that incorporate the area’s rich history and reflect Fenger’s values and passion.

Blue Bird Insulation is a natural compliment to an already existing construction business. Spray foam insulation is ‘here and now’ in the ‘Green Energy’ climate, to replace all other existing and old school insulation products. It has to many advantages over other insulation products to list here. Want to increase the ‘R-value’ along with resale value of your home? Think spray foam insulation! Clean – Efficient – Permanent!

Contact Hilmar today for a no obligation consultation – [CLICK HERE]

Several studies which were conducted have indicated that approximately in 40% of the structures, energy is lost mainly due to
poor air insulation. Insulation such as fiberglass usually is stabled into place or gaps along the edges when stuck against
walls, permitting air to pass through very easily, reducing the effectiveness and the efficiency of the insulation.

Westchester NY Spray foam insulation is one of the best forms of insulation. In comparison to fiberglass insulation, it is supposed to provide maximum air and moisture resistance, along with various other benefits.

As an added bonus, the Federal Government is offering up to $500 in tax credits for residential home owners to insulate your home. [Click here] to find out if you qualify.

Hammer Throw – Westchester Road Runners Summer Series

On Tuesday, August 2nd at 6:30pm, Somers High School will host the Westchester Road Runners Summer Series. Regardless of the meet’s name, a rare treat will be in store for field event enthusiasts. The hammer throw will feature world class athletes, including two national age group champions and a current hopeful for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
It would be impressive enough to say that Alec Faldermeyer of Middletown, NY was a two-time NCAA All-American as a true freshman at UCLA in the weight throw and hammer. However, his hammer season did not end with the academic year, as he went on to win the 2011 USATF Junior (Under 20) National Championships. Following that, Alec won the 2011 Pan-American Junior championships in Florida earlier this month, throwing the 13.2 lbs hammer over 239 feet! Never satisfied with his own performances, however, next Alec now has his sights set on the American junior hammer throw record, which he will try to obtain next Tuesday at Somers.

Rudy Winkler of Albany, NY had an equally stellar year. Once again, it would be remarkable enough to mention that Rudy won the indoor national high school championships in the weight, and national high school outdoor championships in the hammer as a sophomore! To add to his stellar season, Rudy went on to be a finalist at the World Youth (Under 17) Championships in France with the 11 pound hammer. Rudy will also be chasing the American youth record in the hammer at Somers next Tuesday.

Matt DiBuono of New Rochelle, NY placed third at this years’ USATF Senior National Championships in Oregon. This feat is made even more impressive by the fact that this was Matt’s first USATF National Championships appearance. His years of hard work and dedication have now led him to be a real contender for the 2012 Olympic team that will go to London next year. Rather than chasing a specific record, Matt will simply try to improve his personal best of 251’-3” with the 16 lbs hammer at Somers next Tuesday. If he does that, he will improve his spot in the world rankings, improving his chances of placing in the top three again at next year’s Olympic Trials in Oregon.

While the three marquee athletes in the hammer might all be in different age groups, it will still be a great show. For anyone who appreciates the strength of weightlifters, the grace of dancers, and the coordination of circus performers all wrapped in to one incredible event, the hammer competition next Tuesday at Somers is one that nobody will want to miss.
